Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity is a hoverboard-racing game, sequel to Sonic Riders, developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega, released for the Playstation 2 and Nintendo Wii in 2008.

Gameplay

Much like its precessor, Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity is a racing game where eight characters race against each other using futuristic hover boards, skates and bikes known as "Extreme Gears". Once again, the characters are divided into three varying types, Speed, Flight and Power, with Speed type characters having the ability of grinding on rails, Flight type characters being able to fly through floating rings which give them boost and Power Type characters being able to destroy certain obstacles throughout the circuits.

In this game, all of the characters have an ancient Babylonians stone which allows the user to manipulate gravity called Ark of the Cosmos. The racers can use this stone to perform two moves called Gravity Control and Gravity Dive. The Gravity Control alters the gravity of the course, allowing players to reach otherwise-inaccessible areas and shortcuts. The Gravity Dive creates a small black hole that points gravity forward down the track, giving the player a powerful free-fall boost that is further augmented by striking objects in the vicinity that the hole displaces, such as cars or signs.

The Extreme Gears in this game, are powered by an energy gauge which stores GP (Gravity Points) called GP Gauge, which is displayed at the lower right of the screen and is fill. During the races, the Extreme Gear's GP Gauge slowly decreases. Using the Gravity Control and Gravity Dive also costs some GP. If a player runs out of air, their won't be able to use Gravity Control nor Gravity Dive. When this happens, the character shall look for an "Air Pit", a special terminal that refill the Extreme Gear's Air Tank entirely which can be found throughout the circuits.

To prevent their Extreme Gear from running out of GP the player can refill their air by jumping off ramps or off opponents' slipstream at the right time, with higher-rated tricks sequences restoring more GP.

This game also features a new system called "Gear Change". Once players gain a certain number of rings during a race, they can choose to activate one of their Gear Parts. Gear Parts are predetermined based on the racer's equipped Extreme Gear, and will grant bonuses when activated, such as increasing a character's top speed or automatically accessing shortcuts that would otherwise require Gravity Control.

Characters

NiGHTS as they appear in the game.

The game has a total of 18 characters (eleven being unlockables). NiGHTS, who appeared in the previous game as one of the three guest characters, was the only guest character to return to this game, where AiAi and Ulala were replaced by Amigo from the Samba de Amigo series and Billy Hatcher from the platformer Billy Hatcher & the Giant Egg respectively.

To unlock NiGHTS, the player must beat all of the Doctor Eggman's missions (a mode unlocked by clearing the game's story mode). NiGHTS is once again, a Flight type characters, however they can only use the Flight type ability of flying through rings if the Air Ride Skill is installed in their Extreme Gear.

The Night Sky.

The Night Sky returns as NiGHTS default extreme gear and it is unlocked along with NiGHTS, once the player beats all of the Dr. Eggman's missions. The Night Sky doesn't have any special feature nor unique ability. Its gear parts are the default fly type ones, being the Max Speed UP, Air Ride and GP Gauge UP. In this game, the Night Sky can be used by all of the characters but Doctor Eggman, though only in the Survival Relay mode. In the races and every other mode, the Night Sky is exclusive to NiGHTS.
